Interview with Fausto Maraldi
Dear Readers,
I would like to say «Thank You» everyone who has come this far in reading and supporting me for almost a year. Dax Trading Ideas project has passed +100 episodes and I was planning to celebrate it with all subscribers. Today we have with us a special guest, an Italian trader with over +25 years of experience in the markets, Fausto Maraldi. It is an honor for me to be able to talk with a trader who works every day in the field.
In this industry there are many braggarts and smoke sellers. Finding traders who every day «get their hands dirty» for better or worse is always rare. The trading world is made of illusionists who try to make people believe things that are very different from reality. What I have often told Dax Trading Ideas community is that when we talk to a financial trader, nine times out of ten we are doing so with a person who is constantly losing money in the market. Unearthing the rare gems of true traders with years of experience behind them, scars on their skin, blood, sweat and tears in the markets is really difficult. Usually these people remain in obscurity. Fausto has come out, he wants to open his world and tell us what's behind the show. Being behind the scenes is a unique way to learn from the best, I hope you appreciate the time!

In questo settore ci sono tanti millantatori e venditori di fumo. Trovare dei trader che ogni giorno si «sporcano le mani» nel bene e nel male è sempre raro. Il mondo del trading è fatto di illusionisti che cercano di far credere delle cose ben diverse dalla realtà. Quello che spesso ho raccontato alla community di Dax Trading Ideas è che quando parliamo con un trader finanziario, nove volte su dieci lo stiamo facendo con una persona che perde costantemente denaro sul mercato. Scovare le gemme rare di veri trader con anni di esperienza alle spalle, cicatrici sulla pelle, sangue, sudore e lacrime sui mercati è davvero difficile. Solitamente queste persone rimangono nell’oscurità. Fausto è uscito fuori, vuole aprirci il suo mondo e raccontare quello che c’è dietro lo show. Stare dietro le quinte è un modo unico per imparare dai migliori, spero apprezzerete il tempo dedicato!

Questa sarà la prima, dove cercheremo di carpire qualche segreto che Fausto vorrà svelarci, ma soprattutto l’esperienza di un trader così longevo sui mercati. Molte persone continuano a cercare tecniche e metodologie che, seppur valide, sono nulla se non appoggiate su basi di esperienza e vita vissuta sui mercati finanziari. La gestione della componente emotiva è la base per la crescita e lo sviluppo del trader; sarà curioso scoprire come Fausto è riuscito a fare questo. (Mirko Milito) — «Hello Fausto and thank you for immediately accepting my invitation for the interview! I’m honored to have you as the first guest inside my Dax Trading Ideas Newsletter. Today we are celebrating over +100 articles and I immediately thought the best way to do it was to host one of the best Italian traders, so here we are! I'd say let's start right away: can you tell readers a little more about when and how your passion for trading began?»
FAUSTO MARALDI — Hi Mirko and thank you for inviting me. It’s a pleasure for me to share part of my time with your large community of traders and investors. Let me tell you my story. I started trading first with stocks in 1996 and then with futures derivative of Italian market, the FIB, today vulgarly called FTSEMIB. I made my first contract on January 8th 1998. I started like everyone else, with ups and downs, but I still didn't really understand what I was doing. After a couple of years I met Maurizio Masetti of Gann World, and that was the turning point of my career from beginner to professional trader, learning a methodology I still carry with me in my experience. Profits started to arrive so I decided to increase my trading by adding options between 1999 and 2000. So it all began. It's been 26 years that every day I'm in the front row fighting on financial markets...a quarter of a century I've been fighting against best minds on the planet!
(Mirko Milito) — «Ciao Fausto e grazie per aver subito accettato il mio invito per l’intervista! Sono onorato di averti come primo ospite all’interno della Newsletter Dax Trading Ideas. Oggi celebriamo il superamento dei 100 articoli e subito ho pensato che il modo migliore per farlo era quello di ospitare uno dei migliori trader italiani, e quindi eccoci qui! Direi di partire subito: puoi dire ai lettori qualcosa di più di quando e come è iniziata la tua avventura appassionante sui mercati finanziari?»
FAUSTO MARALDI — Ciao Mirko e grazie a te di avermi invitato. E’ un piacere per me poter condividere parte del mio tempo con la tua numerosa comunità di traders e investitori. Ti racconto un po’ la mia storia. Ho cominciato a fare l’attività di trading prima con le azioni nel 1996 e poi con il derivato future del mercato italiano, il FIB, oggi volgarmente detto FTSEMIB. Il primo contratto l’ho fatto l’8 Gennaio del 1998. Ho iniziato come iniziano tutti, alti e bassi ma ancora non avevo capito realmente cosa stavo facendo. Dopo un paio di anni ho conosciuto Maurizio Masetti della Gann World, e quello è stato il punto di svolta della mia carriera da trader principiante a professionista, imparando una metodologia che tutt’ora mi porto dietro nel mio bagaglio d’esperienza. I profitti iniziarono ad arrivare così decisi di incrementare l’operatività aggiungendo le opzioni tra il 1999 e gli anni 2000. Così tutto ebbe inizio. Sono 26 anni che ogni giorno sono in prima fila e combatto sui mercati finanziari…un quarto di secolo che lotto contro le migliori menti del pianeta!
(M) — «Markets are addictive, often traders can't get away from the monitor. How many hours per day do you devote to financial markets and trading activity?»
FAUSTO MARALDI — When I started out, there was no telematic contracting yet. Orders were passed over the phone. To trade a derivative contract it took 1-2 minutes while you were able to talk to a bank operator and another 3-4 minutes while you were executed at market. Everything was less hectic and in some ways it was even better: you didn't have tick execution you wanted, but you thought more about what to do and you didn't have the addiction you have today. You had less swagger and fear was an emotional brake helped you think things through. Even management that today everyone calls «money management» was better, stricter: margins to operate were rigid, higher in monetary terms, there was no intraday reduction and there were no synthetic markets that allow you to scale with leverage huge contracts with little capital. The entry threshold was high and often this meant more professionalism.
With advent of trading online I started to make many more trades and therefore to gain and lose more money: but making many executions was not synonymous with more gains. Exact opposite. I began to throw in many trades, most of them in profit. You enter on market flow and you feel like a master of the game. The moment of overconfidence on market is fatal to take back all profits: after a perfect day with thousands of euro gained and hundreds of executed trades, it is enough to make a mistake on the last shot that you take it all back. This is classic mistake mainly committed by so called expert traders. Greed is trader's first enemy.
Trading is part of my life. It is a job that ennobles me so much, it almost creates an addiction. Every day I receive messages, of all types and on all social networks. The wave of affection I feel among my customers and fans is truly incredible, and in order not to be overwhelmed by it, I must always be focused. I practically never take a break: between my trading and the one I share in the Capitano Signals Trading Room, I can say that I dedicate almost 20 hours a day to trading!
(M) — «I mercati creano assuefazione, spesso i traders non riescono ad allontanarsi dal monitor. Tu quante ore dedichi al giorno all’analisi dei mercati finanziari e all’attività di trading?»
FAUSTO MARALDI — Quando ho iniziato ancora non c’era la contrattazione telematica. Gli ordini si passavano al telefono. Per scambiare un contratto derivato passavano 1-2 minuti mentre riuscivi a parlare con un operatore della banca e altri 3-4 minuti mentre venivi eseguito a mercato. Tutto era meno frenetico e per certi versi era addirittura più bello: non avevi l’esecuzione al tick come volevi te, ma riflettevi di più sul da farsi e non avevi la dipendenza che hai oggi. Si era meno spavaldi e la paura era un freno emotivo che ti aiutava a ragionare. Anche la gestione che oggi tutti chiamano «money management» era migliore, più severa: i margini per operare erano rigidi, più alti in termini monetari, non esisteva la riduzione intraday e non esistevano i mercati sintetici che ti permettono di scalare con la leva finanziaria contratti enormi con poco capitale. La soglia di ingresso era alta e spesso questo significava più professionalità.
Con l’avvento del trading online ho iniziato a fare molte più operazioni e quindi a guadagnare e perdere più soldi: ma fare tanti eseguiti non era sinonimo di più guadagni. L’esatto contrario. Iniziai a buttare dentro a mercato tanti trades, la maggior parte in profitto. Entri nel flusso del mercato e ti senti padrone del gioco. Il momento di eccessiva confidenza sul mercato è quello fatale per rimangiarti tutti i profitti: dopo una giornata perfetta con migliaia di euro sul conto e centinaia di eseguiti, basta sbagliare l’ultimo colpo che ti rimangi tutto. Questo è l’errore classico che commettono principalmente i trader cosidetti esperti. L’avidità è il primo nemico del trader.
L’attività di trader fa parte della mia vita. E’ un lavoro che mi nobilita tantissimo a tal punto da creare quasi una dipendenza. Ogni giorno ricevo messaggi, di tutti i tipi e su tutti i social network. L’onda di affetto che percepisco tra i miei clienti e appassionati è davvero incredibile e per non esserne travolto devo essere sempre concentrato e sul pezzo. Praticamente non stacco mai: tra la mia operatività e quella che condivido all’interno della Trading Room Capitano Signals, posso dire che dedico quasi 20 ore al giorno al trading!
(M) — «From your videos it's clear adrenaline and passion you put into the financial markets, it's really great to see a trader with as much experience as you are still focused. I guess there is also a rational part to understanding the markets. Can you tell us what methodology you use for analysis and what are your favorite tools?»
FAUSTO MARALDI — I use Gann's methodology, which I have learned doing the course with Maurizio Masetti in 1999, who was first analyst to send an operative Newsletter on FIB. I learned a lot from him, I consider him a true master: working with him was like learning an art. Over the years I have also developed a personal proprietary method, based on statistics, volatility and movements of daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly bars. I also have in-depth knowledge of technical analysis, which is much denigrated but which I find useful especially in the first phase of studying chart and context. Over the years I have also studied cyclical and Elliott analysis which I use to support my trading plan.
I start from a long term analysis and then I narrow the field and try to catch opportunities that market gives me every day. Every evening I wait for the closing of main markets to prepare trading strategy for the next day: Telegram channel is in continuous turmoil and in addition to the signal I like to explain what I do and what are motivations behind the click. My trading is done exclusively on the stock indices: FIB, DAX, EuroStoxx and American markets, SP500, Nasdaq and Dow Jones.
(M) — «Dai tuoi video è chiara l’adrenalina e la passione che hai nel fare questo lavoro. E’ davvero fantastico vedere un trader con tanta esperienza come te, sia ancora lì sul pezzo. Immagino ci sia anche una parte razionale che dedichi alla comprensione dei mercati. Puoi dirci quale metodologia utilizzi per l'analisi e quali sono i tuoi strumenti preferiti?»
FAUSTO MARALDI — Io adopero la metodologia di Gann, che ho appreso facendo il corso con Maurizio Masetti nel 1999, che è stato il primo analista a mandare una Newsletter operativa sul FIB. Ho imparato tantissimo da lui, lo considero un vero maestro: lavorare con lui è stato come imparare un arte. Con gli anni ho sviluppato anche un metodo personale proprietario, basato sulla statistica, sulla volatilità e sui movimenti delle barre giornaliere, settimanali, mensili e trimestrali. Ho conoscenze approfondite anche di analisi tecnica, tanto denigrata, ma che reputo utile soprattutto in una prima fase di studio del grafico e del contesto. Nel corso degli anni ho studiato anche l’analisi ciclica e quella di Elliott che utilizzo a supporto del mio piano di trading.
Parto da un tipo di analisi di lungo periodo per poi restringere il campo e cercare di cogliere le opportunità che il mercato mi dà ogni giorno. Ogni sera attendo le chiusure dei principali mercati per preparare la strategia operativa per il giorno successivo: il canale Telegram è in continuo fermento ed oltre al segnale, mi piace spiegare quello che faccio e quali sono le motivazioni dietro al click. Il mio trading è fatto esclusivamente sugli indici azionari: FIB, DAX, EuroStoxx e sui mercati Americani, SP500, Nasdaq e Dow Jones.
(M) — «A few years ago you decided to launch the Captain's Signal Service. I've had pleasure of being inside your community and it's been a fantastic experience in every way. Can you explain a little more about what the service consists of?»
FAUSTO MARALDI — I have a Telegram channel with over 500 subscribers. I put my face on it and expose myself every day with trading analysis and market entries. Within the channel I send signals on FIB, DAX, EuroStoxx and American indices, SP500, Nasdaq and Dow Jones.
It gives me a lot of satisfaction to keep up with my crew! Just think that in the last period I have a profitability rate close to 90% and I closed an average of 1 trade every 4 months with a loss. Really incredible results: when I’m in tune with market I try to ride trend until the end. Gann's methodology gives me correct scenario analysis and I know when I’m on the right side I have to take profit that market offers me. It gives me great satisfaction to be able to pass on to all these people over +25 years of experience in the markets.In the otherside is that sometimes I feel weight of responsibility of all these people who rely on me and therefore I must always be lucid and present. It's not easy being Captain!
(M) — «Da alcuni anni hai deciso di lanciare il Servizio di Segnali del Capitano. Ho avuto la fortuna e il piacere di stare dentro la tua community ed è stata un’esperienza fantastica sotto tutti i punti di vista. Puoi spiegarci un po' meglio in cosa consiste il servizio?»
FAUSTO MARALDI — Ho un canale Telegram con oltre 500 iscritti. Ci metto la faccia e mi espongo tutti i giorni con analisi operative e ingressi a mercato. All’interno del canale invio segnali sul FIB, sul DAX, sull’EuroStoxx e sugli indici Americani, SP500, Nasdaq e Dow Jones.
Mi da tantissima soddisfazione stare dietro alla mia ciurma! Pensa che nell’ultimo periodo ho un tasso di profittabilità vicina al 90% ed ho chiuso in loss mediamente 1 trade ogni 4 mesi. Davvero dei risultati incredibili: quando sono in sintonia con il mercato cerco di cavalcare al massimo tutto il trend. La metodologia di Gann mi da la corretta analisi di scenario e so che quando sono dalla parte giusta devo prendermi il profitto che il mercato mi offre. Mi gratifica tantissimo riuscire a trasmettere a tutte queste persone oltre 25 anni di esperienza sui mercati. L’altro lato della medaglia è che alcune volte sento il peso della responsabilità di tutte queste persone che si affidano a me e quindi devo essere sempre lucido e presente. Non è facile essere Capitano!
(M) — «Defeats, the hardest ones mark traders' lives. Technique is not enough and mentality is what makes you make the leap. A few times I thought this couldn't be my job...did it ever occur to you that maybe trading wasn't your path or did you ever have doubts about it?»
FAUSTO MARALDI — Of course! Any self-respecting trader has his or her skeletons in the closet. I’m a clean person and I have always told my stories. Like everyone else I have regrets. I made mistake of giving up some of my passions such as reading. You are no longer focused to the words and attention people give you, you watch less TV (perhaps this is the only positive thing) and this has repercussions in your love life. Only those who have really been through it can understand what I'm telling you, more than an interview it's a confession!
Consider that I’m a musician, I’m a conservatory graduate and played piano. Out of passion I still do. I taught for many years, I did live music and I can tell you that was real life! It made a lot less but those were my best years. While I was happily with my music I encountered trading, in hindsight I regret my actions!
(M) — «Le sconfitte, quelle più dure, segnano la vita dei trader. Non basta la tecnica. La mentalità è quella che ti farà fare il salto di qualità. Alcune volte ho pensato che questo non potesse essere il mio lavoro...a te è mai venuto in mente che forse il trading non era la tua strada o hai mai avuto dubbi a riguardo?»
FAUSTO MARALDI — Certamente! Qualsiasi trader che si rispetti ha i suoi scheletri nell’armadio. Io sono una persona pulita e le mie storie le ho sempre raccontate. Come tutti ho dei rimpianti. Ho fatto l’errore di rinunciare ad alcune mie passioni tipo quello della lettura. Non sei più focalizzato sulle parole e alle attenzioni che ti riservano le persone, guardi meno tv (forse questa è l’unica cosa positiva) e ahimè questo si ripercuote anche nella vita sentimentale. Solo chi ci è passato davvero può capire quello che ti sto dicendo, più che un’intervista è una confessione!
Considera che io sono un musicista, sono diplomato in conservatorio ed ho suonato il pianoforte. Per passione lo faccio ancora. Ho insegnato per tanti anni, ho fatto musica dal vivo e posso dirti che quella era vera vita! Rendeva molto meno ma sono stati i miei anni più belli. Mentre ero felicemente con la mia musica ho incontrato il trading, col senno di poi sono pentito delle mie azioni!
