How To Defend Against Markets with Hedging

Every day markets show us their strength. Whether it is a bull or a bear market, when a trend starts it hurts traders. Regardless of whether they are trend-followers or contrarians. Let me explain better.
The trend-follower trader who fills bulletin boards «I follow the trend», «I trade what I see», «I follow the markets» in reality are all words in the wind that don’t have a feedback in live trading. If you are a trader who thinks these things I suggest you to leave this reading, the reason is soon explained: you don't do trading. If you follow the trend it means that after +1%, +100 or +1000 points you must still be in the market. «Yes, but I use trailing stop», another nonsense. Trailing stop as well as the myth of risk-return 1:3-5-10 are just excuses to make our trading less conscious.
So it happens that after just 50 points in our favor on the DAX, our hand starts to shake: erosion of potential profit, thought of losing what we have worked so hard to achieve, will wear out trader and unless you are a «buy and forget» investor you will be forced to face the psychological component which by nature tends to be conservative. Not even trailing stop will solve this because raising the stop has done nothing but blow up the whole fantastic 1:3 (5, 10, 100) risk return plan. Argument is very broad but who does trading for real (not comments on the forum the next day) can only agree with what has been said.
So what to do?
In my opinion this technique is often underestimated, disparaged and even mocked is hedging. Hedging is nothing more than freezing the loss (in most cases) or profit, in case of impending macro news or expected volatility. It can also be understood as a method of risk control to be used instead of a stop loss.
Many shout «never without a stop loss» but do they really know what a stop loss is? There are many ways to use it (time stop, stop & reverse etc.) and hedging is a form of protection. This technique can be used both on futures and cfd, let's go into detail with some practical examples.
Ogni giorno i mercati ci mostrano la loro forza. Che sia un mercato toro oppure orso, quando un trend parte fa male ai trader. Indipendentemente dal fatto che essi siano trend-followers o contrarian. Mi spiego meglio.
Il trader trend-follower che riempie le bacheche «io seguo il trend», «io trado quello che vedo», «io assecondo i mercati» in realtà sono tutte parole al vento che non hanno un riscontro nell’operatività. Se sei un trader che pensa queste cose ti consiglio di lasciare questa lettura, il perchè è presto spiegato: non fai trading. Se segui il trend vuol dire che dopo +1%, +100 o +1000 punti tu debba essere ancora a mercato. «Si ma io utilizzo il trailing stop», altra castroneria. Il trailing stop così come il mito del rischio-rendimento 1:3-5-10 sono soltanto delle scuse per rendere meno consapevole il nostro trading.
Così capita che dopo appena 50 punti a nostro favore sul DAX, la mano inizi a tremare: l'erosione del potenziale profitto, il pensiero di poter perdere quello che col sudore si è conquistato, logorerà a tal punto il trader e a meno che tu non sia un trader «compra e dimentica» sarai costretto ad affrontare la componente psicologica che per natura tende ad essere conservativa. Neanche il trailing stop risolverà questo perché alzando lo stop non si è fatto nient'altro che far saltare tutto il fantastico piano del rischio rendimento 1:3 (5, 10, 100). Il discorso è molto ampio ma chi fa trading per davvero (no i commenti sul forum il giorno dopo) non potrà che essere d'accordo con quanto detto.
Allora cosa fare?
A mio parere una tecnica spesso sottovalutata, denigrata e anche sbeffeggiata è l'hedging. L'hedging non è nient’altro che il congelamento della perdita (nella maggior parte dei casi) o del profitto, in caso di imminenti news macro o volatilità attesa. Può essere intesa anche come un metodo di controllo del rischio da utilizzare al posto dello stop loss.
Molti gridano «mai senza stop loss» ma sanno davvero cosa è lo stop loss? Ci sono tanti modi di utilizzarlo (time stop, stop & reverse ecc.) e l'hedging è una forma di protezione. Questa tecnica è possibile utilizzarla sia su future che su cfd, andiamo nel dettaglio con alcuni esempi pratici.
DAX Future (trading example)
According to my trading plan I decide to take a short (bearish) position on the German index. I don’t use a full contract, but I use micro-futures to build a position with a target of 15000 points. This modus operandi gives me 3 advantages:
I can easily manage overnight;
broker applies a very low margin;
high volatility doesn’t scare me.
Therefore I spend my 5 shots I have assumed as risk on the levels:
15260 (1st contract)
15380 (2nd contract)
15500 (3rd contract)
15620 (4th contract)
15740 (5th contract)
DAX begins day after day to give against me so I find myself to use 5 contracts that I had decided a priori to spend. I wake up the next day and I see my profit/loss is close to the threshold limit that I can sustain economically and psychologically, so I activate hedging procedure. At level 15620 I proceed to insert a limit order of 1 Mini-DAX equal to 5 micro-DAX. In case price goes up again and goes far above 15740, I raise the limit order on this level. Remember that even hedging must always be done with a good amount of suffering: trader must suffer if he wants to achieve a result, he cannot sit back and place the hedge on period high, he must always optimize the position «to advantage». After having frozen the loss, second part of the plan is implemented, which concerns the dismantling of position. This can be done by continuing to sell on higher levels in order to raise the average load price, or by buying a possible lunge to bring the two load prices closer to the same level. I will not dwell on the technical explanation because it would take many hours and is not the topic of today's special.
DAX CFD (trading example)
On the CFD (contract for difference) everything we have written is practically identical only that we don’t use a different contract because CFD allows to have opposite positions even on the same instrument (1 lot in buy DAX, 1 lot in sell). On CFD it is also easier the construction of hedging because at that point you can use smallest size instead of starting immediately covering all the float, but also here we go too much into technical details that are not the subject of this discussion.

DAX Future (esempio operativo)
In base al mio piano di trading decido di intraprendere una posizione short (ribassista) sull'indice tedesco. Non utilizzo un contratto pieno, bensì mi avvalgo dei micro-futures per costruire una posizione con target 15000 punti. Questo modus operandi mi dà 3 vantaggi:
posso gestire serenamente l’overnight;
il broker mi applica una marginazione molto bassa;
l’alta volatilità non mi spaventa.
Pertanto distribuisco i miei 5 colpi che ho ipotizzato come rischio sui livelli:
15260 (1° contratto)
15380 (2° contratto)
15500 (3° contratto)
15620 (4° contratto)
15740 (5° contratto)
15260 | 15380 | 15500 | 15620 | 15740. Il DAX inizia giorno dopo giorno a darmi contro così mi trovo ad utilizzare i 5 contratti che avevo deciso a priori di spendere. Mi sveglio l’indomani e vedo che il mio profit/loss è vicino alla soglia limite che riesco a sostenere economicamente e psicologicamente, quindi attivo la procedura di copertura, l’hedging. Al livello 15620 procedo all’inserimento di un ordine limite di 1 Mini-DAX pari a 5 micro-DAX. Qualora il prezzo salga ancora e si allontani molto sopra 15740, alzo l’ordine limite su questo livello. Ricordate che anche le coperture vanno fatte sempre con una buona dose di sofferenza: il trader deve soffrire se vuole raggiungere un risultato, non può stare comodo e inserire la copertura sul massimo di periodo, deve sempre ottimizzare la posizione «a vantaggio». Dopo aver congelato la perdita, si attua la seconda parte del piano che riguarda lo smontaggio della posizione. Questo può avvenire continuando a vendere su livelli più alti in modo tale da alzare il prezzo medio di carico, oppure comprare un eventuale affondo per avvicinare i due prezzi di carico verso lo stesso livello. Non mi dilungherò nella spiegazione tecnica perché richiederebbe molte ore e non è il tema dello speciale di oggi.
DAX CFD (esempio operativo)
Sul CFD (contratto per differenza) tutto quello che abbiamo scritto è praticamente identico soltanto che non si utilizza un contratto diverso perché il CFD consente di avere posizioni contrarie anche sullo stesso strumento (1 lotto in acquisto di DAX, 1 lotto in vendita). Sul cfd è anche più facile la costruzione dell’hedging perché a quel punto si può utilizzare la size più piccola anziché partire subito coprendo tutto il flottante, ma anche qui scendiamo troppo nei dettagli tecnici che non sono argomento di questa trattazione.

Conclusions
Is hedging the solution to all trader woes? Absolutely not, but it can help. Granted that it is a quite sophisticated technique deserves deepening, practice and clear ideas from the beginning; it is very important to be familiar with financial tool, to know how and when you can optimize your positions. It's an advanced technique for expert traders this is clear, but it doesn't mean that it can't be learned. As in all things, you have to put your hands in it to be able to understand its meaning and refine the technique. Don't listen to all those who speak without having tried, without ever having clicked on the mouse: every trader has his own style and attitude on the market. This is what works for me, but to each his own, to each his own way!
Conclusioni
L’hedging è la soluzione a tutti i mali del trader? Assolutamente no, ma può aiutare. Premesso che è una tecnica abbastanza sofisticata che merita approfondimento, pratica e idee chiare fin dall’inizio; è molto importante avere dimestichezza con il sottostante, sapere il come e il quando ottimizzare le posizioni. È una tecnica avanzata per trader esperti questo è chiaro, ma non vuol dire che non può essere imparata. Come in tutte le cose, bisogna metterci le mani dentro per poter capirne il senso ed affinare la tecnica. Non date retta a tutti quelli che parlano senza aver provato, senza aver fatto mai un click sul mouse: ogni trader ha il suo stile e il suo atteggiamento sul mercato. Questo è quello che va bene per me e potrebbe non andare bene ad altri, ma ad ognuno il suo: ad ognuno la sua strada!
