CFD: Trading Safe or Scam?
A deep dive into the most talked about financial instrument of recent years: CFDs. A short journey through the history, pros, cons and false myths
Developed in Britain in 1974 as a way to profit from gold, Contracts for Difference, commonly called by their abbreviation CFDs, began to be traded on a large scale from the early 1990s. Based on equity swaps, they had the advantage of being a stamp duty-free margin product. Their invention is mainly credited to Brian Keelan and Jon Wood, both UBS Warburg employees, during their negotiations with Trafalgar House.
These financial products were initially used by hedge funds and institutional investors in order to protect their equity exposure on the London Stock Market in a cost-effective manner. Subsequently, institutional traders began to use CFDs to hedge equity exposure and avoid taxes. After them, several companies began promoting them to retail traders in the late 1990s, emphasizing their leverage and tax-free status in the UK.
In the late 1990s, CFDs were first introduced to commercial investors. A number of British companies helped to popularize them by offering a service marked by innovative online platforms gave the ability to check prices and trade in real time. Around 2000, however, investors realized that real advantage of trading CFDs was not exemption from stamp duty, but rather the ability to apply leverage to any underlying asset. This was turning point that led to the expansion of CFDs. Companies offering this underlying asset immediately responded and expanded the offering by adding indices, global equities, commodities, government bonds, and currencies to the simple stocks on the London Stock Exchange (LSE). Trading CFD indices, such as those based on the major world indices such as Dow Jones, Nasdaq, S&P500, FTSE, DAX and CAC, soon became the most popular activity in CFD trading. But what are CFDs? Let's dig in.
Sviluppati in Gran Bretagna nel 1974 come metodo per trarre profitto dall'oro, i Contratti per Differenza, comunemente chiamati con l’abbreviazione di CFD, hanno iniziato ad essere negoziati su larga scala a partire dall'inizio degli anni '90. Basati sugli swap di capitale, avevano il vantaggio di essere un prodotto a marginazione esente dal bollo. La loro invenzione è principalmente accreditata a Brian Keelan e Jon Wood, entrambi dipendenti UBS Warburg, in occasione della loro trattativa con Trafalgar House.
Tali prodotti finanziari vennero inizialmente utilizzati da hedge funds e investitori istituzionali al fine di proteggere la propria esposizione azionaria sul London Stock Market in modo economicamente conveniente. Successivamente, i trader istituzionali hanno iniziato a utilizzare i CFD per coprire l’esposizione azionaria ed evitare le tasse. Dopo di loro, diverse società hanno iniziato a promuoverli presso i trader al dettaglio alla fine degli anni ‘90, sottolineando la loro leva finanziaria e lo status di esenzione fiscale nel Regno Unito.
Alla fine degli anni '90 i CFD sono stati introdotti per la prima volta agli investitori commerciali. Alcune società inglesi hanno contribuito alla loro diffusione offrendo un servizio contraddistinto da innovative piattaforme online che davano la possibilità di controllare i prezzi e fare trading in tempo reale. Intorno al 2000 gli investitori si accorsero però che il reale vantaggio di fare trading con i CFD non era l'esenzione dal bollo, bensì la possibilità di applicare la leva finanziaria a qualsiasi attività sottostante. Questa fu la svolta che determinò l'espansione dei CFD. Le società che offrivano questo sottostante, risposero immediatamente ed espansero l'offerta aggiungendo alle semplici azioni del London Stock Exchange (LSE) anche indici, azioni globali, commodity, titoli di stato e valute. Fare trading con indici CFD, come per esempio quelli basati sui maggiori indici mondiali quali Dow Jones, Nasdaq, S&P500, FTSE, DAX e CAC, è presto diventata l'attività più diffusa nel trading con i CFD. Ma cosa sono i CFD? Scaviamo a fondo.
What are CFDs?
A contract for difference or CFD, is a financial instrument whose price is derived from the value of other types of investment instruments. Rather than physically trading or exchanging the financial asset, CFD represents a transaction in which two parties, buyer or seller and usually the broker, agree to exchange money based on the change in value of the underlying asset that occurs between opening and closing transaction. If value of the underlying asset increases or decreases, buying or selling party makes a profit and broker must close the trade while also earning from brokerage (commission or spread, ed.), simultaneously hedging against risk.
While in the regulated market buyer's counterparty is usually the seller, in CFDs there is a real possibility that orders sent on the reference broker, are not traded directly to the market but handled internally at a dealing desk. This may seem strange to you, but such a procedure is very common when orders are executed. In recent years, qualified entities have undertaken procedures such as orderflow selling, referred to by the abbreviation PFOF: technically this involves the aggregation and disposal of significant orders received from clients and traded for a fee on specific dark pools or exchanges.

Even super-acclaimed brokers who are considered «reliable» with over 30 years of experience use this system of internalizing and selling orders-so it is no wonder your small order is routed to any system at the broker's or bank's convenience. After all, we are a drop in the ocean of markets.
Cosa sono i CFD?
Un contratto per differenza o CFD, è uno strumento finanziario il cui prezzo deriva dal valore di altre tipologie di strumenti d'investimento. Anziché negoziare o scambiare fisicamente l'attività finanziaria, il CFD rappresenta un'operazione in cui due parti, il compratore o venditore e solitamente il broker, convengono per scambiare denaro sulla base della variazione di valore dell'attività sottostante che intercorre tra il momento in cui l'operazione viene aperta e quello in cui viene chiusa. Se il valore dell'attività sottostante aumenta o diminuisce, la parte acquirente o venditrice realizza un guadagno e il broker dovrà chiudere l’operazione guadagnando anch’essi dall’intermediazione (commissione o spread, ndr), coprendosi contestualmente dal rischio.
Mentre nel mercato regolamentato la controparte del compratore è solitamente il venditore, nei CFD esiste la possibilità concreta che gli ordini inviati sul broker di riferimento, non siano tradati direttamente a mercato ma gestite internamente in un dealing desk. Tutto ciò potrà sembrarvi strano, ma tale procedura è assai comune quando gli ordini vengono eseguiti. Negli ultimi anni, soggetti abilitati hanno intrapreso procedure come ad esempio la vendita dell’orderflow, definita con l’abbreviazione di PFOF: tecnicamente questo comporta l’aggregazione e la cessione di ordini significativi ricevuti da clienti e scambiati dietro un corrispettivo su specifiche dark pool o exchange.

Anche broker super acclamati e considerati «affidabili» con oltre 30 anni di esperienza, utilizzano questo sistema di internalizzazione e vendita degli ordini: non c’è dunque da meravigliarsi se il vostro piccolo ordine venga instradato su un qualunque sistema a convenienza del broker o della banca. Dopotutto siamo una goccia nel mare dei mercati.
CFDs: devil or holy water?
As we know, CFDs belong to the category of unregulated financial products, that is, traded under a very specific non-centralized entity. They are an agreement entered into in the trading of derivative financial instruments in which settlement differences between the opening and closing prices of transaction are settled in cash. CFDs don’t involve the delivery of physical assets or securities. In summary CFDs:
They are financial contracts pay differences in the settlement price between open and closed trades
They essentially allow investors to trade direction of short-term securities
They are cash-settled, but usually allow for a large trading margin, so that investors need only put up a small amount of contract's notional payoff (margin as collateral, ed.)
Basically, there is no juxtaposition of what is good versus what is bad, that is, comparing futures to CFDs. Each financial instrument has its pros and cons, and you should not sanctify one to demonize the other. While futures have a more institutional function, with higher operating costs in terms of margin requirements, commissions, and access to the exchange, CFDs are more flexible instruments used purely by retail customers, where with small amounts of capital it is possible to start trading safely.
In conclusion, if you have heard anyone around saying that «with CFDs the loss is unlimited», you will quickly understand they don’t know at all what are the mechanisms regulate financial markets and related trading instruments. Risk is the driving force behind any investment. Without risk, any activity would not yield. Where there is risk there is opportunity: difference is in controlling it, consciously applying leverage, according to one's availability and aptitude. Don't trade just because you can quickly open a trading account and «click buy or sell» on your mouse or smartphone. Trading is a serious business that requires expertise and years of experience, whatever instrument you are using. Be smart and thorough before you judge anything!
I CFD: diavolo o acqua santa?
Come sappiamo, i CFD appartengono alla categoria dei prodotti finanziari non regolamentati, ovvero scambiati sotto un’entità ben specifica non centralizzata. Essi sono un accordo stipulato nel trading di strumenti finanziari derivati in cui le differenze di regolamento tra il prezzo di apertura e quello di chiusura dell'operazione sono regolate in contanti. I CFD non prevedono la consegna di beni o titoli fisici. In sintesi i CFD:
Sono dei contratti finanziari che pagano le differenze nel prezzo di regolamento tra le operazioni aperte e quelle chiuse
Consentono essenzialmente agli investitori di negoziare la direzione dei titoli a brevissimo termine
Sono regolati in contanti, ma di solito consentono un ampio margine di negoziazione, in modo che gli investitori debbano mettere a disposizione solo una piccola quantità del payoff nozionale del contratto (margine a garanzia, ndr)
Di base non esiste una contrapposizione di ciò che è bene contro ciò che è male, ovvero paragonare futures a CFD. Ogni strumento finanziario ha i suoi pro e i suoi contro e non bisogna santificarne uno per demonizzarne l’altro. Mentre i futures hanno una funzione più istituzionale, con costi di gestione più alti in termini di margine richiesto, commissioni e accesso alla borsa di riferimento, i CFD sono strumenti più flessibili utilizzati prettamente da clientela retail, dove con piccoli capitali è possibile iniziare a fare trading in totale sicurezza.
In conclusione, se in giro avete sentito dire da qualcuno che «con i CFD la perdita è illimitata», capirete velocemente che costoro non conoscono minimamente quali sono i meccanismi che regolano i mercati finanziari e gli strumenti di trading ad esso collegati. Il rischio è il motore di qualsiasi investimento. Senza la componente del rischio, qualsiasi attività non renderebbe. Dove c’è rischio c’è opportunità: la differenza sta nel controllarlo, applicando coscientemente la leva finanziaria, in base alle proprie disponibilità e attitudine. Non fare trading soltanto perchè puoi velocemente aprire un conto trading e «cliccare compra o vendi» sul mouse o sul tuo smartphone. Il trading è un attività seria che richiede competenza e anni di esperienza, qualunque sia lo strumento che tu stai utilizzando. Siate intelligenti e approfondite prima di giudicare qualcosa!
